{April 20, 2008}   Moon Boots

..as a child anything and everything causes great excitement and wonder! For my aunts wedding in 1989 it was such an occasion. I remember the preparation alone was the equivalent of preparing for the first Apollo mission to the moon!

We entered a small shop selling items for cold climates and this was something to prepare for, as it’s not that cold in Africa! As we walked in my sister and I saw that it was equipped with it’s very own astro turf slope, perfect for two youngsters to slide down.

After what seemed like hours of sliding down the slight incline we emerged ready to pioneer our mission with our very own Moon Boots!

Maybe, I am the only one who remembers Moon Boots. They were these wonderful space-like boots that sucked your foot in a polystyrene encasing covered with a what’s similar to a plastic freezer bag. Actually if I remember it correctly, they had the same effect as sticking your foot in a freezer bag – hmm, can we say sweaty!

I kid you not, my first trip abroad and abroad at age 10 and in all the photos I am wearing plastic covering almost all of my body…ah, the eighties!

Not only did I have to wear Moon Boots, I was the only one of my friends to have them. I also had to wear this massive grey anorak that went down to my knees and was big enough to allow room for five layers of clothing. To finish it off, I had to wear a plastic rain coat with hood least I melt in the British drizzle.

All I can say is that to look through the pictures now is the look on my face it was anything but… considering everyone else in the photos hysterical but judging from looked somewhat normal!
