It’s been a eventful few days… we went to the UN for a few presentations which were really hard to concentrate through due to the lack of sleep and constant traveling for the last week or so.

The only thing that has imprinted itself in my mind from the visit was that the UN has condom dispensers in every washroom including the women’s. Oh and the statement, “The UN is neutral… but let’s use ______ as an example of _________”

It’s pretty funny as no one is ever really “neutral”, even if you refrain from politics you are rarely ever neutral… we will always have an opinion, those who don’t either don’t want to think about or haven’t taken the time… everyone has an opinion, even those it’s naive and uneducated. Humans are rarely without an opinion.

Then we were on the Canadian Embassy… the speakers seemed very committed and passionate about the work that they were trying to accomplish alongside the Kenyan people.

The next day we took a small plane from Nairobi to Kisumu – I’m sure I’m not the only who was thankful to avoid the pot hole roads.

In Kisumu we went to the community placement centre, St.Rita’s and then the orphanage. There are a lot of orphans in Kenya due to AIDS. Not all children are infected with AIDS but if the parent has died from AIDS the children become “contaminated” or at least that’s how they are viewed leaving many children homeless.

{June 30, 2005}   Kenya Part One

Video of Kenya Trip

{June 24, 2005}   Made it to Nairobi!!

We landed in Nairobi – immediately you feel Africa… dry!

Went to pick up the luggage I was a tad disappointed to discover my suitcase wasn’t quite in same condition it left NA in besides the heys emblem ripped off and the frame a little bent my new bag doesn’t look so new…oh, and my sister was so wrong about the light blue colour!!
Afterwards we all piled into the matatu, a Swahili word for “three” since it cost 3 shillings to ride the minibus taxi. Driving fom Nairobi airport towards the city you go through this game park that it fenced off we saw a few giraffes in the distance.

When we arrived at the ACK Guest house they had breakfast ready for us and the sausages were a little odd and the bread is the main staple… but I am thankful there is great mango juice.

Later we went to the Village Market, which is very European, upstairs is a flea market. I bought 2 necklaces then down to check my email at the internet cafe. Then ate lunch and had an americano before heading back to listen to the “staying healthy” talk by some health officials.

{June 23, 2005}   Arrived in Heathrow

…it was a long wait but we found some benches that we tried to sleep on near the KLM counter in Heathrow airport – I got 2 hours max! I went for a walk and soon found the Starbucks so the lack of sleep was slightly diminished. Hmm, good old americano… when I asked for cream I received a few odd looks … thankfully my North American accent was pretty thick and I smiled like nothing was unusual about my request! It was pretty amusing though I guess I’ve been in North America too long!

The next flight was interesting… very much so. I sat next to this guy who talked a lot, very friendly. He had some interesting theories on G-d and. He pretty much dominated the conversation…

yeah, interesting! I have a knack for meeting the interesting ones …I guess ;-)
