{June 28, 2005}   Safari anyone?

Wow… the Masai Mara Village was today’s main attraction other than the safari it was pretty cool.

We were given Karibuku, which is welcome, as we entered into the village with a dance by the women and then another by the men.

The men’s welcome dance was well… unique to say the least! I was their first victim, er um I mean their first guest. During the entire duration of the welcome I couldn’t help but think, “I hope this isn’t a marriage dance!”

We in turn reciprocated with our own not so traditional non-uniform dance, the macarena!! They laughed at us… a LOT!!!

Our guide showed us his house … it turns out the women build the houses while the men hunt and steal cattle or women from other villages. Our guide was a bachelor so his house was built by his mother ans sisters. His job was to hunt and be a man – or at least become one!

Today we also had three safaris one in the morning and another later on in the afternoon and then a night ride … we were also treated to breakfast in the bush right after the safari. The afternoon being the best so far as we came across some lions, I think we saw 9 in total. The evening safari was a lot of fun mainly because we were in a huge truck with benches in the back.

{June 27, 2005}   Jambo! Jambo!

Jambo! Which is “hello” in Swahili.

Today we drove away from Nairobi heading towards the Great Rift Valley and then on to the Masai Mara… well that’s what the plan was, sounds simple enough!

Yes, we drove and stalled, well one of the three mutatus broke down and we all piled into two… very cramped! I hit my head several times due to the severity of the pot holed roads. It felt like one of the longest rides of my life. We stopped at an outpost to view Rift Valley and buy a few souvenirs

Afterwards we all piled back into the vans and continued on. Arriving near the main gate we were instantly accosted by local Masai women selling their wares … we had to shut the windows as they were very persistent and almost throw the items in without taking no for an answer …eventually we made it!

After settling in and getting sorted we had our first safari ride. I found myself getting battered and bruised but at the end of the day I’m getting some footage.
